53. AT THE FOOTBALL MATCH

Alan:Two pints of bitter, please.

Bar attendant: Yes, sir.

Alan:Well, Sergei, whatyou think of the game so far?

Sergei: Not so good. But it’s only half time. You can never tell at half time.

Alan:That’s true. Our teamusually better during the second half.

Sergei: They’ve unlucky so far, that’s all.

Alan:Well, let’s wait and see.

Sergei: you often go to football matches, Alan?

Alan:I try to see all the important games. It’s sometimes difficult to get tickets, of course.

Sergei: Well, you can see all the important matches on television, I suppose.

Alan:That’s never quite the same.

Sergei: I suppose, you’re right. Can I get you another beer?

Alan:Let’s get it after the game, perhaps. I think it’s time to go back.

Sergei: Let’s go then. And thanks for my beer, Alan.

Alan: Here you!

Amy:Hello, darling! I’m so glad you are back. you had a good journey? Where’s your luggage?

Jeena: In the car, of course, where else? Alan, help me with the suitcase, please.

Alan: Certainly. Here you! Whyit so heavy?

Jeena:Heavy? But there’s nothing in it.

Amy:Nonsense, there must something in it, Jeena.

Jeena:Nothing heavy, I mean. Just a few stones.

Alan: Stones? What an idea?

Jeena:Youn’t understand, Alan. That’s for my geology class.

Amy:Stop ARGUING, you two. Let’s get Debbie’s things into the house. there anything in the boot?

Jeena:No, nothing. I’ve got everything here.

Amy: you sure you n’t forgotten anything?

Jeena:Yes, no, I mean…

Amy:So, youforgotten something. Whatit? Let’s have another look in

the car.

Jeena:Oh,n’t bother, Amy. It’s nothing really important.

Amy:Theresomething on the front seat. A paper parcel. Put it out, Alan.

Jeena: n’t trouble, Alan, it’s…it’s only a book. I can take it out later.

Alan: That’s not trouble at all! There you! Oh, bother…

Amy:Now you’ve dropped it and torn the paper. Dear me!

Alan: Whatit, Amy?

Amy:Look!

Alan: Ideal Marriage. Well, well, Jeena.

Alan:Whenyou go to Manchester, Sergei?

Sergei: The day after tomorrow.

Alan: you know anybody there?

Sergei: Nobody, I’m afraid.

Alan:That’s too bad. It’s a pity we have no friends in Manchester.

But, perhaps, Debby knows somebody.

Sergei: No, Debby knows anybody here either. I’ve already asked her. But itn’t really matter, Alan.

I’m only going to stay in Birmingham for two weeks.

Alan:Where you going next?

Sergei: To Manchester. I’m going to stay there for two months.

Alan:That’s better. We have some good friends in Manchester. I can give them a call about you. Theyvery nice people.

Sergei: Thank you, Alan. You know, it’s not always easy to make friends in a strange country. But everybody here

so kind and helpful, you two and Debby particularly.

You’ve made mystay in London very pleasant indeed.

Alan:Oh, well, we’ve enjoyed SHOWING around. It makes a pleasant change. By the way,anybody going to meet you at the station in Manchester?

Sergei: Yes, somebody from the research institute.

Alan:What timeyour train?

Sergei: 10:30 from King’s Cross.

Alan:O.K. I can arrange a taxi for you to get you there.

Sergei: Thank you, Alan.
